The program offers strong clinical and didactic training in all areas of Pediatric Dentistry including interceptive orthodontics, restorative, oral surgery, sedation, and oral rehabilitation (under general anesthesia). Its patients include healthy children, as well as developmentally, physically, medically, and mentally disabled children. Upon completion of their residency, the residents receive a Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry and meet the advanced education eligibility requirements of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
The Pediatric Dental curriculum consists of clinical and didactic training by attending dentists and physicians from BronxCare’s dental and medical specialties. Hospital rotations include anesthesia, pediatric medicine, and emergency room. During the second year, residents rotate through the Dental Department at the Rose F. Kennedy Center (located in the Bronx) for in-depth clinical training with special needs patients. Literature review as well as treatment, planning sessions, and research presentations are also important components of the educational experience.
The program’s strengths include extensive clinical training, a diverse patient population, excellent medical/dental staff support, dental and ongoing education supervised by full- and part-time faculty, and an emergency and operating room experience. Given the complexity of the patient population and diversity of cases, BronxCare’s residents are uniquely qualified for independent pediatric practice. Residents consistently secure their top choices for employment and are excellent Dentists to the Community.
