As Chairman, Radiology, and Radiology Safety Officer, Dr. Charbel Ishak is responsible for a department that offers highly specialized and technologically advanced imaging services, 24/7. “BronxCare’s physicians depend on our proven ability to provide them with the radiologic images and reports needed to make an accurate diagnosis and assessment to determine the appropriate treatment for their patients,” stated Dr. Ishak. His skilled team of radiologists, technologists, and nurses, in addition to those of Empire State Radiology, are providing a wide range of needed services. This company provides radiology subspecialties and diagnostic services to many hospitals, including BronxCare. Dr. Ishak is also involved in ensuring compliance with regulatory standards as well as reinforcing and developing policies and procedures related to radiation safety for patients and staff.
Under Dr. Ishak’s leadership, the Radiology department is continuing to grow and expand. Additional CT scanners are being installed to meet the growing imaging demands of the hospital, ER, and BronxCare’s outpatient practices. Existing scanners are also being replaced by state-of-the-art technology, including artificial intelligence components, and an Interventional Radiology Suite will be completed in 2024.
As an Associate Professor of Radiology and Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, Dr. Ishak is taking on a pivotal role in teaching medical students, residents and fellows, radiology technicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants. “I instruct and provide them with essential academic background knowledge and hands-on experience in a variety of cardiovascular, interventional, general, and specialty radiology, as well as all types of pre-and post-related care of image-guided, minimally invasive, and other surgical procedures,” stated Dr. Ishak.
Before coming to the United States in 2003, Dr. Ishak attended the Lebanese University School of Medicine, where he earned his medical degree. He continued his medical education at NYU Langone Health System, completing a postdoctoral fellowship and an internship in General Surgery. This was followed by a Radiology residency at Nassau University Hospital and additional specialized training in Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Ishak also earned an MBA in Health Services Administration from Hofstra University. It is noteworthy that Dr. Ishak is double board-certified in Vascular and Interventional Radiology from the American Board of Radiology. He is also a widely recognized author, lecturer, and recipient of numerous awards for excellence in Radiology.
Dr. Ishak and his wife, Maria, a physician transplant nephrologist, have two children, George, 17, and Joya, 14. The Ishaks enjoy swimming and hosting family events at their home in Scarsdale, New York, as well as international travel.
“I am continually striving to make sure our patients are highly satisfied, before, during, and after their procedures, and we are accomplishing this goal for them,” stated Dr. Ishak.
