As Vice President, Patient Care Services/Chief Nursing Officer, Erica Dusseldorp, RN, is applying her vast experience and expertise in the nursing field to the benefit of BronxCare’s patients, staff, and the community. At BronxCare, Ms. Dusseldorp’s responsibilities include oversight of the day-to-day operations and long-term strategic planning for the inpatient care units at the Concourse Division. In addition, key supporting departments, including Nursing Education, Nursing Quality, Nursing Finance, and Nursing Supply Chain, fall under her purview. She is also taking on an important leadership role in streamlining standards of care, including integrating the use of meaningful data to evaluate and ensure high quality outcomes, maximize patient safety, and achieve operational efficiencies.
Ms. Dusseldorp strongly believes that successful nursing leaders must connect with their employees to fully understand the needs of their staff, while also serving as a role model by acting as a transformational force in a challenging health care environment. “These characteristics will allow us to deal with the complexities of caring for a patient population with serious chronic diseases,” stated Ms. Dusseldorp. As a result, she frequently meets with her Patient Care Managers and Directors of Nursing to discuss, address, and resolve any barriers encountered on their respective units. “Our meetings are very structured and productive, with the goal of driving nurse engagement, improving our care delivery, while ensuring that we focus on improving our patients’ perception of care,” stated Ms. Dusseldorp.
Recruitment and retention of staff remain another top priority, and Ms. Dusseldorp is actively involved in this process from within and outside the organization. “In order to recruit and retain nurses in such a competitive environment, it’s critical to develop a culture where staff feels valued and the work they do is meaningful,” stated Ms. Dusseldorp. She takes pride in the performance of her Patient Care Managers and has recently recruited new talent for Director and Patient Care Manager roles. Building a high-performing leadership team will allow her to collaborate with the medical and administrative staff and focus on strategic planning and quality improvement goals.
