Shirley Acevedo, Administrative Director, Radiology, describes herself as a “self-motivated individual, tireless in a continuing effort to excel and succeed in addressing current and future challenges.” During her 27-year career at BronxCare, Ms. Acevedo has consistently moved in this direction by contributing to the growth of BronxCare’s Radiology Department, as well as advancing into positions of increasing responsibility. It was in 1998 that Ms. Acevedo first came to BronxCare as a Data Management Coordinator. Her success in organizing the Radiology film library and database, as well as expediting the processing of reports in response to ongoing requests, among other responsibilities, led to her promotion to MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) Supervisor in 2002, following her pursuit of higher education and attaining certification and registration with the American Registry of MRI Technologists.
As imaging technology evolved, the hospital moved from analog imaging to digital imaging. Ms. Acevedo was assigned to oversee the project and implementation of the Imagecast Radiology Information System in 2004 and to Technical Manager, Radiology Department, in 2006. In each of these positions, Ms. Acevedo distinguished herself and was commended for her accomplishments in keeping the Radiology Department compliant with regulatory standards and up to date with technological advances.
In her current role as Administrative Director, Ms. Acevedo has assumed responsibility for the entire operation of the Radiology Department, which consists of nine modalities, three site divisions, and three clinical-related contracts that include a Linear Accelerator. She supervises a staff of 86 technologists and works “hand in hand” with Dr. Charbel Ishak, Chairman, Radiology, and more than 100 radiologists. “There is no doubt that we are meeting the increasing demands placed on us by physicians and staff, along with those of our patients,” stated Ms. Acevedo. She takes pride in her continuing efforts and success in improving the patient experience, as well as in the state-of-the-art imaging equipment now in place. Ms. Acevedo has applied her experience and expertise, participating in a number of hospital-wide BronxCare committees and the Joint Commission’s survey process.
Ms. Acevedo was born at BronxCare and raised in the Fordham section of the Bronx. Her father from the Dominican Republic and mother from Puerto Rico instilled a strong work ethic in her. Ms. Acevedo drives 116 miles to and from BronxCare. “It’s well worth it. The Bronx is where I grew up, and there is no better satisfaction than to work in the place where I was born while giving back to my community,” stated Ms. Acevedo.
